Meet Katie: Founder, Teacher, and Coach!

Hello and welcome to Katie Arpin Coaching! I started KAC in 2021 after teaching for 10 years and tutoring for the previous 8 in Connecticut and New York. After moving to New York City, I started working with students in individual tutoring sessions more regularly, and I started to see massive shifts in not only academic performance, but confidence. This has become my passion: supporting students with evidence based strategies to build confident, independent learners!

My Approach: Why building trust and confidence matters

Thousands of students have sat in my classroom since I started teaching, and I have seen it all: enthusiasm for learning, fear of failing, joy in excelling, panic when struggling.

I know this all too well. As a student who struggled with confidence, my self-doubt often hindered my performance in middle school and the start of high school. That changed when I found a teacher who sat me down and told me, "You are capable, and you can do anything you put your mind to. Sometimes, we just need a little help." This was the first teacher who took the time to show me how to improve. They had patience, they cared, and most importantly, they believed in me.

So, simply put, that is the foundation for my work. Yes, I use evidence based strategies for reading, writing, and executive functioning, but the key to helping students improve is building confidence; having confidence in themselves, and knowing that others have confidence in them.

Tutoring Services

I offer individual and group tutoring sessions in reading, writing, and executive functioning. While most of my students have worked with me for years, I also support short term, targeted writing programs over the summer including support for college personal statements!

Tutoring sessions are tailored to each student's needs.

We start with an introductory call where we get to know each other, discuss pain points and goals, and create a plan of action for sessions. Parents are kept in the loop on progress as we move into weekly sessions.

Here are some examples of what I have worked on with students this past year:

  • Paragraph writing (bridging the gap from Lower School to Middle School)

  • Grammar

  • How to analyze literary texts

  • How to research effectively

  • Essay writing (bridging the gap from Middle School to High School)

  • Creating effective thesis statements

  • How to study and manage time effectively

  • And more!

Why Coaching Works

It is no surprise that individual support improves student outcomes. A recent study following over 2,000 students in middle and high school reported that 3 in 4 students who consistently attended multiple high quality tutoring sessions per week saw up to 3 grade letter improvements, and 90% of students reported improved confidence.

Ultimately, though, coaching works when you find the right fit! I encourage all parents and students looking for support to get schedule a call and get to know your potential tutor.
